The Best Radio Show of 2007?

Have I just experienced the best radio show of 2007? Stop what you’re doing or at least engage in some multi-tasking action and head to XFM’s listen again feature and check out last night’s Xposure with Jon Kennedy.

The new REVEREND AND THE MAKERS album is awesome with the added bonus that the lead singer is funny, insightful and even dare I say it a tad inspiring.

Great new music, thought provoking conversation, quite possibly the best radio I’ve heard this year. They start about an hour in to the show.

Enjoy

Masters At Work at The Superbowl?!

The odd record label or two has started sending me stuff but I never get to talk to you about it cause its always commercial rubbish. Don’t get me wrong I’m chuffed to notch that first mark on the record plugger’s bedpost but I’m clearly in the category marked something like ‘yeh we’ve got some spare why not/ we need to shift a few more of these to make up the numbers’. So this is quite an exciting moment when I first get to say to you…

“I received something rather special in the post this weekend”.. from one of my many record label contacts you understand (!) . To be fair I knew I was on to a winner the moment I regained consciousness from the fact I’d somehow got onto 4HERO’s mailing list, after all I’m still keeping this whole thing on a need to know basis, come to think of it they’re the sort of peeps I need to know.

Needless to say their new track is tops, a beautiful record with a couple of sick mixes too. If you wanna chill go for the original, groove its all about the house mix and rave-on to the DnB mix. The track is called ‘Morning Child‘ – Love it.

Keepin the eclectic groove vibe alive Gilles Peterson started his latest show with a cracking and very random track by ELEMENTS OF LIFE called ‘One Dream’. And it gets more random.. when ringing my mate up in an excited frenzy about this track he trys to tell me it was a special release for the Superbowl by Masters at Work!! Regardless of whether this is true its defo not been released in the UK so its brand new and I can tell ya about it : 0 )

Two more tracks that got me dancing this week included a Pete Tong discovery on his Fast Trax vodcast. A real old skool piece of funky house which I still have no shame in loving but Tong is not normally so forthcoming on these days, the track is called ‘Something About The Way‘ and the artist is TERABEATS ft JAMES COLLINS and I definitely agree with Mr Tong on this selection.

Even better however is a piece of disco house that will probably make most teenagers these days vomit except those who started young on Radio One and can just about remember the house music institution that was Danny Rampling’s Love Groove Dance Party. STAR CHASER – Let Your Mind Go Free is 100% new but with massive nods to the the 90s handbag era not to mention the 70s disco that if I could only borrow Dr Who’s Tardis for one night I’d just have to visit, watch out Travolta I’m coming!

Yesterday after I’d hung up my disco shoes I quite enjoyed being castigated and reminded by friends that I hadn’t yet mentioed THE WOMBATS – ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division’.

Job done.

I’m feeling nervous

A couple of heads up for ya, one of which is making me kinda nervous giving that I do have this about new music (you noticed yeh?). I am loving what I think is the new tune from possible Eve beau Ty but I am nervous cause it is evoking that vague ‘I’m sure I know you’ kinda vibe that you get about things that remind you of when you were five.

But I am assertively not so reliably informed that the ‘The Tale‘ is new featuring on a fresh-up Big Dada compilation. Regardless of whether I am committing Brand Nu blasphemy it is a damn good tune. I just hope Eve has heard it cause it’ll give her a good insight what sort of mischief she is letting herself in for!

Gideon Conn ‘I Want You Around’ is another rather good piece of chilled understated funk that could be hiphop or street folk depending on your particular perspective. More importantly it is an excellent tune and you can check it out in awesome My Space stereo on the link below.

Have a great weekend you

50 Cent on Xfm?!

A couple of tracks to point your way courtesy of about as diverse radio sources as you could imagine although both feature heavily the letter x… 1xtra and xfm being the stations in question.

I have Ace and Vis (not xfm) to thank for pointing out that 50 CENT can make great tunes and isn’t just one big marketing machine. I’m definitely in the KANYE camp as far as this album battle they’ve got going on. That said I’m feeling 50′s new track when LUDACRIS works his remix magic on ‘I Get Money’. On the guilty pleasures vibe they also played that NICOLE track I mentioned weeks ago which is surely going to be huge.

John Kennedy’s got a cracking tune of the week by a Norwegian artist called IDA MARIA, the lead track on what I think is an EP is ‘Oh My God’ and basically sounds like your other half having a rant at you with full backing from an indie band. Great energy although not necessarily positive so enjoy by yourself and definitely don’t let the love of your life hear it!

Jk played another cracker which I think was called 586 – ‘Rags and Riches‘ but I cannot find any info on it anywhere. So if your myspace searching abilities are more powerful than mine and you do find out something about this lot please share the luv : 0 )

Shakira on Brand Nu?!

Let me be totally clear it is on the Pacha label so of course it’s not what you might think, let me add into the mix (if you’ll forgive the pun) that a remix courtesy of FEMI B and LEGGZ totally transforms the track so yeh I don’t mind admitting that I like the new SHAKIRA record, there you go I said it. It is called ‘Las De Le Inuition’.

Had a great weekend (did you?) and not just because I rediscovered my long lost love of South American pop divas, lots of dancing and plenty of new music. Aside from Shakira the most shocking new music discovery for me was a remix of WILDCHILD’s ‘Renegade Master’ that I actually liked.

It’s one of those classics we’ve mentioned before that you have to be very brave to take on but unlike Cafe Del Mar or Born Slippy many have and predictably failed so welcome stage left DOOM and HOODRAT. No idea who they are but they have pulled off a proper filthy mix of the great track, finally a proper electro version to do justice to a track that gets into a lot of peeps Top 10s.

Course one of the challenges of being out on the town as opposed to online traipsing obsecure internet radio stations (yes radio stations what else would I be checking online at 4am?) is actually finding out what the tracks are. Most of the time I do my bit for new music society, leave the dancefloor and pester the dj to find out the tune but this weekend I just wanted to dance so I must admit I let the side down a bit when it comes to putting names to the beats.

I hope you can forgive me and maybe this video which I accidentally stumbled across when I wasn’t checking porn honest will help that forgiveness process. Its the video to the Stukie song I keep going on about and it turns out the artist is just 12 years old!! Please pass over the obvious sick jokes and check this funny vid, I really think this could chart

Bob Sinclar Asian Style

Just a quickie from me (cue obvious jokes) that it looks like the second SHAPESHIFTERS album could be a considerably improvement on the first. That said that contained a couple of awesome tracks such as Lola’s Theme it was all the filler that was the issue. Which means the fact that their new track ‘New Day‘ is really good may actually mean f all!

Speaking of big house records whilst listening to Bobby and Nihals’ awesome weekly takeover of Radio One heard a hilarious Asian take on Bob Sinclar’s – ‘World Hold On’ called ‘World Nai Lagda‘ by JAY DABHI vs MIXTABSHI. This was after an amazing tune by a SWAMI called ‘Hey Hey‘ which is still whistling around my head and is exactly the sort of unique sounding tune which you will hear no where else on radio apart from their show (assuming you exclude their shows on the Asian Network of course!).

Right – I owe you a chart I believe…

Carnival – I blame the parents

One phrase for you and also implicitly one very clear excuse why I’m only making my first post of the week on Wednesday… Notting Hill Carnival!! It was absolutely amazing, what a way to lose one’s Carnival virginity. It was the musical party equivalent of losing your actual virginity on your 16th birthday with Swedish triplets celebrating their 21st, absolutely awesome although I should add Carnival lasts a bit longer than 7 seconds.

If like me you have really good reasons for not having been before like a certain festival along the M4 and up the M1 next year just take the fucking plunge, sacrifice the rock and embrace the streets of West London. It is a truly amazing, liberating and uplifting party experience. You’re probably gathering I quite enjoyed it!

One issue I did have though was a lack of new music. I expected an established street party like this to be a bit more innovative musically and whilst there was a huge array of different sounds and genres the desire to please the crowd immediately and the intense competition for the mingling crowds seems to mean everyone plays big hit after big retro hit be it a reggae one, funk one or house one.

That said I did get to hear QQ’s ‘Stookie‘ once which you know I love. That in itself made my day and some of the dance moves being pulled off by the eight year old next to me shamed me greatly (and probably her mum too if she could have seen what that young lady was doing with her hips!). And I did discover a new tune or two its just that the details are a bit sketchy, I think I heard a new track from ESTELLE (purely from recognising her vocals) and it sounded quite good but hey it was sunny, I was dancing in the streets surrounded by happy people so Timmy Mallet’s Yellow Polka watsit would have sounded funky.

carnival.jpg

Being in London I had to take advantage of the chance to indulge in some conventional under a roof surrounded by moody bouncers type raving and in that world I did discover a couple of new house tracks. I can’t yet decide whether DAVID E SUGAR’s ‘Oi Oi New York This Is London’ is inspired or just lame, it’s kinda like a mash-up both musically and of intent of Scott Garcia’s London thing from back in the day and Mr Le Grande’s Hands Up malarky. Rob da Bank actually played it on his show too in the process introducing me to a new SCROOBIUS PIP track which I really enjoyed, leaving Dan alone briefly he’s teamed up with VILA (I’ve no idea either) for ‘When I Grow Up I Want To Be An Astronuat’.

I still need sleep
